Open Source Micro-blogging

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009 by Nicole C. Engard

I have to admit, I have never used Jaiku - Twitter is enough for me - but this news from DownloadSquad peeks my interest:

Google has released the source code for micro-blogging service Jaiku. The company announced earlier this year that it would cease development of Jaiku. But instead of shutting Jaiku down altogether, Google has moved the project so that it now runs on Google App Engine.

Meanwhile, now that JaikuEngine is available to the public, anyone can set up their own version of Jaiku. And developers can help contribute to the project. It should be interesting to see how the project fares. While Twitter certainly dominates the micro-blogging space, it’s possible that the new open source nature of Jaiku will make it attractive to open source enthusiasts.

If you do something neat with this new open source micro-blogging platform, let me know :) I’m curious to see where this goes.

Sweetcron: Automated Lifestream Blog Software

Thursday, August 28th, 2008 by Nicole C. Engard

I signed up for the Sweetcron mailing list a while ago to keep up with this open source lifestream software. Today I find out that the beta has been released:

Sweetcron is now available for download. I’m only announcing it to this list for now - don’t you feel special?

It’s an open source project so you can grab the download from here:
http://code.google.com/p/sweetcron/downloads/list

Ongoing documentation is here, but it should be enough to get you started:
http://code.google.com/p/sweetcron/w/list

And finally…if you’re having trouble with installing Sweetcron, lets use this discussion group:
http://groups.google.com/group/sweetcron/topics
I’ll keep an eye on the group and try to help as much as I can (but I do have to sleep sometimes).

Cheers and have fun!

Open Source Library Facebook Tool

Monday, July 21st, 2008 by Nicole C. Engard

The Earl Gregg Swem Library is proud to announce the release of it’s Facebook application, Swem Tools to the open source community. Released under the Apache 2.0 license, the project, Facebook Athenaeum (http://code.google.com/p/facebook-athenaeum), allows libraries to quickly develop and customize a Facebook application that provides a searching interface for a library’s catalog, website, databases, or any other search target, pull RSS feeds, and provide users with the ability to show friends their location in the library.

Requirements for the application are relatively light. A set of floor plans in image form, a database compatible with the Pear DB package (MySQL, MSSQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, etc), and PHP 5.

If you’re interested, check out the code. Any comments, questions, etc. can be posted at one of the Google groups (http://groups.google.com/group/facebook-athenaeum-users and http://groups.google.com/group/facebook-athenaeum-tech).

Awesome!! This found via Code4Lib.

Facebook To Open Source Facebook Platform

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008 by Nicole C. Engard

Facebook and open source addicts unite - we can soon help out with the Facebook Platform. I read this today (a day late):

Sometime soon, perhaps this week, Facebook will turn the year-old Facebook Platform into an open source project, multiple sources have told us. The immediate effect will be to allow any social network to become Facebook Platform compatible - meaning application developers can easily take their Facebook applications and have them run on those social networks, too.

And then I saw this:

A Facebook spokesperson has confirmed to us that the social networking company will announce an open-source initiative around its Facebook Platform sometime today or tomorrow. We originally broke this story we broke yesterday. We’ve also learned from another source that the name of the initiative will be fbOpen.

Not on Facebook? Start by adding me as a friend and becoming a fan of LibLime.

Open Source Social Networking

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 by Nicole C. Engard

Insoshi, built on Ruby with Rails, is a neat sounding new addition to both the open source and social networking worlds.

Insoshi is a product and a project. The product aims to be the best open-source social networking platform. The project is to make the product!

Since Insoshi is open source, you can download the code from our GitHub repository and make your own social network. Then stay in touch by joining the Insoshi developer site—which is powered by Insoshi!

Features include:

  • Activity feeds
  • Profiles with photos and comment walls
  • Connections/friending
  • Discussion forums
  • Blogs with comments
  • Messaging, including read/replied/trashed
  • Search for profiles, forums, and messages
  • Admin panel with site preferences

This is well worth keeping an eye on. Thanks to TechCrunch for pointing it out.
